When award-winning photog and videographer Greg Huszar recorded the first story for his new project (Dean Kreutzer – Over The Hill Orchards), it convinced him that he was on the right path and to keep chasing a dream of his own: use the magic of his craft to celebrate people doing what they love.
“I travel all over the country shooting pictures for different clients,” Huszar explains. “Lots of times, I end up spending a day or two on location, getting different shots in different lighting for an article or ad campaign. After hanging around a couple of days, you get to know people a little bit, and I’d often come away from shoots realizing it’s not just the pictures, but the people behind the pictures who have a story to tell… their passion. When you see in their eyes how much they care about what they’re doing and what they are passionate about, it’s inspiring. I’ve always wanted to find a way to share that with everyone.”
“Passion Fruit” is the first in Huszar’s “People of” series. He plans to add to the collection over the coming months by including stories, still photography and more video. “Now that the first one’s out there, it’s feeling real and I’m excited about doing more,” Huszar smiles. “It’s a little scary taking that first step to do a personal project on your own. You doubt yourself sometimes, but so far I’ve been able to juggle the pre-production, interviews, shooting and sound, which has been successful. On the post-production side, I’ve collaborated with an editor to carve out the storyline and final edit,” he nods. “So far, it’s working out.”
Part of why it’s working out is Huszar’s gift of gab and comfortable style, which helps his subjects forget about the camera. He chats as easily with the gruff, no-nonsense cattle farmer from the Prairies as with a busy CEO of a food processing corporation in downtown Toronto. In fact, his congenial “getting to know people a little bit” often lands him an invitation to the family supper table or local eatery after he’s done shooting (Huszar humbly suggests the invitations are offered because the he and his subjects share a strong connection to food – them as producers and him as a country kid who appreciates a good meal).

PASSION FRUIT
Dean Kreutzer knew he was taking a big chance leaving his IT career and city life to grow grapes and berries in – of all places – rural Saskatchewan. Even scarier was not trying, explains this pioneer of cold-climate fruit production, wine maker and owner of Over the Hill Orchards.
